What Is A Brain Injury?

It is when the brain tissue is impacted from a force outside the skull. When a motorcyclist injures the brain, it is called a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Common symptoms of TBI:

  1. Loss of consciousness although brain injury can occur without loss of
  2. consciousness
  3. Motorcyclist feels “disoriented” or “confused”
  4. Impairment of learning new information
  5. Forgetfulness
  6. Not feeling like the same person as before the accident
  7. Changes of mood, often anger
  8. Headaches

Treatment For Brain Injuries

Fortunately, for most motorcyclists with mild TBI, the symptoms go away in about six months.

For motorcyclists with persistent symptoms, specialists in TBI must be consulted. For some motorcyclists, treatment can include physical therapy, cognitive therapy and speech therapy.

How Can A Motorcycle Accident Attorney Help?

A lawyer who has represented many motorcyclists with mild TBI to severe TBI recognizes the common symptoms of TBI and helps the motorcyclist get to the “right” medical providers.

When a motorcyclist tells me he/she forgets what they wanted to buy in the grocery store, I know the motorcyclist may have a TBI and needs to be examined by a specialist.

I know if symptoms have not resolved within six months, my client needs to see a specialist.

Must There Be A Skull Fracture To Have A TBI?

Most TBIs occur without a skull fracture. The damage to the brain occurs even when the skull looks normal.

I am a motorcyclist accident attorney and not a doctor. This is not medical advice but is based on my 30 years of experience representing clients with TBI.
